Abhrak Bhasma in Ayurveda: Benefits, Rasayana Action, Therapeutic Uses and Its Role in Manovaha Srotas Disorders

Dr Dipali Solanke

Ayurveda possesses a unique branch known as Rasashastra, which deals with the therapeutic use of metals and minerals after proper purification and incineration. Among these preparations, Abhrak Bhasma occupies a very important place due to its broad spectrum of therapeutic action.

Abhrak Bhasma is prepared from Abhraka (mica) through a series of classical pharmaceutical procedures such as Shodhana (purification), Dhanyabhraka preparation, and Marana (incineration). These processes convert the mineral into an extremely fine and bio-assimilable form that can be safely administered for therapeutic purposes. abhrak bhasma

In Ayurvedic literature, Abhrak Bhasma is described as a Rasayana medicine capable of strengthening body tissues, enhancing vitality, improving longevity, and restoring physiological balance.

Because of its diverse therapeutic actions, Abhrak Bhasma is used in numerous chronic diseases affecting the respiratory system, digestive system, reproductive system, and nervous system. Classical texts also describe its beneficial influence on mental strength and cognitive functions, indicating its action on Manovaha Srotas, the channels responsible for mental activities.

This article explores the pharmacology, benefits, therapeutic uses, Rasayana properties, and psychological importance of Abhrak Bhasma according to Ayurvedic principles.

Abhraka: Mineral Description in Ayurveda

Abhraka is a naturally occurring mineral commonly known as mica. In Rasashastra, it is categorized under Maharasa, a group of substances known for their potent medicinal properties.

From a chemical perspective, mica contains:

  • Potassium oxide (K₂O)
  • Aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃)
  • Silicon dioxide (SiO₂)

These minerals contribute to its therapeutic properties when properly processed into Bhasma. Ayurvedic texts describe four major types of Abhraka based on color.

Types of Abhraka

  1. Krishna Abhraka (Black mica) – most suitable for medicinal use
  2. Rakta Abhraka (Red mica)
  3. Peeta Abhraka (Yellow mica)
  4. Shweta Abhraka (White mica)

Among these varieties, Krishna Abhraka is considered the best for preparing Abhrak Bhasma, as it possesses superior therapeutic potency and structural stability.

Abhrak Bhasma

Preparation of Abhrak Bhasma

The preparation of Abhrak Bhasma involves several important pharmaceutical processes designed to make the mineral safe and therapeutically active.

Shodhana (Purification)

Raw Abhraka contains various impurities that must be removed before therapeutic use. Purification is achieved by heating the mineral and quenching it repeatedly in herbal liquids such as:

  • Gomutra
  • Triphala decoction
  • Various herbal juices

This process enhances its medicinal qualities and removes undesirable components.

Dhanyabhraka Preparation

After purification, Abhraka is powdered and processed with rice grains in water to obtain Dhanyabhraka, a fine form suitable for further incineration.

Marana (Incineration)

The material is triturated with herbal juices and subjected to repeated Puta (calcination cycles). This process converts the mineral into an extremely fine ash called Abhrak Bhasma. In classical Rasashastra, high-quality Abhrak Bhasma may undergo hundreds or even thousands of calcination cycles, producing ultra-fine particles that are easily assimilated by the body.
